Every linen page on this site carries the same number: 170 GSM. Most linen shops print a number like it and very few say what it buys you, which is a shame, because it is one of the few figures in bedding that is hard to inflate. Thread count can be talked up by counting plied yarns twice. GSM is a weight. A scale settles it.
What GSM actually measures
GSM stands for grams per square meter. Cut one square meter of the cloth, put it on a scale, and the reading is the GSM. Ours reads 170.
That is all it is: a density, not a grade. It tells you how much flax sits in a given area of fabric, which in turn tells you a good deal about how that fabric behaves — how opaque it is, how it falls, how it holds heat, how long it takes to soften. What it does not tell you is whether the linen is any good. That part comes later, and it is the part most guides leave out.
Linen is sold by weight because thread count does not work on it. Flax yarns are thicker than cotton yarns, so linen woven at cotton thread counts would come off the loom as canvas. The weights linen actually comes in
Flax is woven across a wide range, and only a slice of it ever becomes bedding.

Inside the bedding band the differences are real but smaller than the marketing suggests. Around 130–150 GSM the cloth is light: it dries quickly and falls readily, but held up to a window it shows more light through, and in daily use it reaches the end of its life sooner. Around 160–180 GSM — where ours sits — the fabric is opaque, drapes without going limp, and works in both summer and winter. Toward 190 GSM it starts to feel firm rather than fluid, and it takes noticeably longer to break in.
Above the bedding band, weight stops being an advantage. A 250 GSM linen makes a superb chair cover and a disappointing sheet: stiff for its first year, slow to soften, and genuinely heavy to wrestle out of a washing machine wet.
What 170 GSM is like to live with
Opaque, first of all. A white sheet at this weight does not shadow what is under it, which is the usual complaint about lighter linen and the reason people who tried a summer-weight sheet often assume all linen is thin.
It falls rather than stands. Drape is mostly a function of weight, and 170 GSM has enough of it to settle around a mattress and hang off the side of a bed instead of holding a crease in the air. It is also the reason a duvet cover at this weight sits down on the insert rather than ballooning.
It works in both directions thermally. Linen has an open structure that lets heat leave in summer, and enough body at this weight to hold a layer of still air in winter. That is not weight-specific magic — it is what linen does — but a cloth much lighter gives up the winter half of it.
And it softens. All linen does, with use rather than with any treatment, and the heavier the cloth the longer it takes. At 170 GSM the first change arrives within a few washes and it keeps going for years. Linen is the strongest natural fiber and, unusually, stronger wet than dry, so the softening is not the fabric wearing out — it is the fibers relaxing. It does not pill on the way.
What the number cannot tell you
Two linens at exactly 170 GSM can feel nothing alike, and this is where GSM stops being useful.
The yarn. Flax is separated into long line fibers and shorter tow fibers. Line yarn is smoother and stronger; tow yarn is cheaper and gives a hairier, more irregular cloth. Both can be woven to the same weight. You can feel the difference immediately and no specification will show it to you.
The weave. The same weight can come from thick yarn woven loosely or finer yarn woven tightly. The first feels chunky and opens up over time; the second feels smooth and dense. Weight alone cannot separate them.
The finish. Fabric can be softened chemically or by heavy enzyme washing, which makes it feel wonderful in a shop and rather less wonderful after a few months, once the finish has gone down the drain and left the underlying cloth behind. Softness that arrives from use lasts; softness that arrives from a bottle does not.
So GSM narrows the field honestly, and then it stops. It is a good first filter and a poor final answer. If a linen is only described by its weight, that is worth noticing.
Weight, shrinkage and the size you actually get
Linen shrinks 3–5% in its first washes, at any weight. That is the fiber's nature and no finish removes it permanently. We cut every piece oversized to absorb it rather than pre-shrinking the cloth, so items settle onto the sizes in the linen size guide after the first one or two washes — cold, as the linen care guide explains.
There is a small consequence for the number itself. When linen shrinks, the same yarn occupies less area, so the finished cloth is slightly denser than the fabric that went into it. It is not a difference you will feel, but it is why a weight quoted for the raw fabric and a weight measured on a washed sheet will not match exactly.
Which weight to choose
If you sleep hot, the instinct is to go as light as possible. It is usually the wrong move: the openness of linen matters far more than twenty grams either way, and a light sheet gives up opacity and lifespan to buy back very little. If your bedroom is cold, the answer is another layer rather than a heavier sheet — linen holds air, and two light layers beat one heavy one.

Common questions
Is higher GSM linen better?
No. Higher GSM is heavier, not better. Above roughly 190 GSM linen becomes upholstery cloth: opaque and durable, but stiff for a long time and heavy when wet. For a bed, the middle of the 130–190 range is where the trade-offs balance.
What GSM is best for linen sheets?
Something between 150 and 185 for a bed in daily use. Ours is 170. Lighter than 150 and you lose opacity and lifespan; heavier than 185 and you are waiting a long time for the cloth to relax.
Does GSM change after washing?
Slightly. Linen shrinks 3–5% in the first washes, so the same yarn ends up in a smaller area and the finished cloth is a little denser than the fabric it was cut from. You will not feel it.
Is 170 GSM too heavy for summer?
No. Linen moves heat and moisture away from the body regardless of weight, and at 170 GSM it is still a medium cloth. The people who find linen too warm in summer are usually describing a much heavier fabric.
How does GSM compare with thread count?
It does not — they measure different things and belong to different fibers. Thread count counts yarns per inch and suits cotton; GSM weighs the cloth and suits linen. Comparing a 170 GSM linen with a 400 thread count cotton tells you nothing useful about either.
Do you state the GSM of every product?
