When one is the right number

Most napkins are bought in fours and sixes, and for four or six of the same size a set is the cheaper way to do it — 7.5% and 10% below the same napkins bought singly. A single is for the cases a set cannot cover: an odd number of seats, a mix of sizes on one table — lunch size for every day, one dinner size at the head — trying a size before committing to six of it, or replacing the one that a dinner ruined.

Replacing is where white has the advantage. It is bleached to a clean white, which is a fixed target, so a napkin bought three years after the first six still matches them. It is also the only color of ours that takes oxygen bleach, so the one you spilled wine on usually comes back. The napkin size guide works through the eight sizes and how many a table needs.

The fabric

100% linen at 170 GSM, European, the same panel used in our white and oatmeal bedding. Naturally absorbent, releases stains readily in the wash.

Care

Wash before first use — cold water, delicate cycle. The napkin is cut 3–5% oversized to absorb the natural shrinkage of linen; it settles to nominal size after 1–2 cold washes. For ongoing care, machine wash at 40 °C (104 °F) on a delicate cycle. Tumble dry low. Oxygen bleach is safe for white linen; do not use chlorine bleach. Certification and origin

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified — the fabric and thread are tested for substances that affect skin and lungs. The flax is European; every piece is cut and sewn in our own workshop near Riga, Latvia — not subcontracted, not relabelled from elsewhere.

Common questions

Should I wash this before first use?
Yes. New linen should always be washed before first use — cold water, delicate cycle. The napkin ships oversized and settles to nominal size after 1–2 cold washes.

Does linen shrink?
Yes — natural fibers shrink. Expect 3–5%. This napkin is cut oversized to absorb that, so the final fit matches the size you ordered.

Does white linen yellow over time?
Not with normal care. White linen yellows when stored damp or when bleached with chlorine. Wash, dry fully, store dry. Oxygen bleach is safe for occasional brightening.
